How Often Should You Get Your Carpet Professionally Cleaned?

Twelve months is the baseline for professional carpet cleaning, but pets, kids, allergies, and traffic change it. A practical schedule for each kind of home.

How Often Should You Get Your Carpet Professionally Cleaned?

Twelve months. That's the honest baseline for professional carpet cleaning in an average home: a couple of adults, no pets, shoes mostly off, nobody with allergies. Once a year keeps the buildup from getting ahead of you.

Very few houses we visit in Sugar Land fit that description, though. Most have kids, a dog, a busy kitchen, and a game room upstairs that hosts half the neighborhood on weekends. For those homes, once a year is too long.

A schedule by household

Use this as a starting point, then adjust to what you see:

  • Light-use home, no pets, one or two people: every 12 to 18 months.
  • Typical family home: every 9 to 12 months.
  • Pets, small children, or frequent guests: every 6 to 9 months.
  • Allergies in the house, or ongoing pet accidents: every 6 months, and the busiest rooms possibly every 3 to 6.

Notice that the schedule doesn't have to be the same for every room. Your family room, hallway, and stairs take most of the traffic. A guest bedroom might see ten people a year. It's perfectly reasonable to have the main living areas done twice a year and the rest of the house once. That's often cheaper than doing everything on the shorter schedule, and it puts the effort where the dirt is.

What pushes your schedule shorter

Pets are the biggest factor. Dogs and cats bring in yard soil, shed dander, leave skin oil on their favorite spots, and have the occasional accident. Even a perfectly behaved dog puts a lot of mileage on a carpet.

Kids are second. They live on the floor, eat on the floor, and spill on the floor.

Allergies change the math, too. When carpet is holding dust, dander, and the pollen that drifts around Fort Bend County most of the year, the person with allergies usually feels it first.

Light carpet shows everything sooner. Shoes worn inside, heavy entertaining, a home office where someone rolls a chair over the same spot all day: all of these shorten the gap.

Signs it's time regardless of the calendar

Sometimes the carpet tells you before the calendar does. The walking paths look gray even right after you vacuum. A room smells a little stale when you first walk in. The carpet feels stiff, rough, or slightly tacky under bare feet, which usually means leftover product from DIY spot cleaning is holding dirt. A spot you treated keeps coming back. Or you simply can't remember the last professional cleaning, which in our experience means it was more than a year ago.

Any one of those is a good enough reason. Two or more and the carpet is overdue.

Why waiting costs more

People stretch the time between cleanings to save money. Understandable, but it usually backfires. Soil left in carpet acts like grit on a sanding block under every footstep, and once the fibers are worn or crushed, cleaning can brighten them but can't make them whole again. Odors are the same story: pet urine treated the week it happens is a small job, and urine that's sat in the pad for a year is a much bigger one.

A regular cleaning also costs less effort each time, because there's less to remove. Our three-room special on the coupons page is $88, which makes a twice-a-year schedule for the main rooms pretty manageable.

Our process is built for frequent cleaning, too. It's low-moisture and leaves no soap in the fibers, so carpet doesn't re-soil faster after each visit, which can happen with methods that leave residue behind. And rooms are back in use quickly enough that you don't have to plan a whole day around it.

Making it stick

Pick your interval from the list above. Then put a recurring reminder in your phone for that many months from your last cleaning. It sounds too simple, but it's what separates the people who keep carpet looking good for fifteen years from the ones who replace it at eight.

Pair it with a few between-visit habits: vacuum the busy rooms several times weekly, blot spills immediately, keep a mat at each outside door, and handle pet accidents the same day. If you have area rugs or upholstery, scheduling their cleaning on the same visit keeps everything on one calendar. See carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, and area rug cleaning for details.
