A lot of our Richmond calls start the same way: there's a wool rug in the front room that came from a grandmother, the fringe has gone the color of weak tea, and somebody told the owner to ship it off to a rug plant for a month. We'd rather clean it on the dining room floor in an afternoon.
That's Richmond in a nutshell. It's the oldest incorporated city in Fort Bend County and the county seat, settled on the Brazos back in 1822, and the 1908 courthouse with its copper dome still anchors downtown. The older houses around Morton Street and the historic district hold onto things: heirloom rugs, antique chairs, original wood floors under wall-to-wall carpet that somebody installed in 1975.
Older homes need a lighter hand
Old textiles and old floors don't like water. A rug with natural dyes can bleed if it's soaked, and wood that's been under carpet for decades can cup if moisture gets into it. So we keep the water low. The carbonated solution does the lifting, so a rug or an older carpet gets clean without the soaking that causes the trouble.
Rugs get cleaned right in your home. No pickup, no month-long wait. Hand-knotted wool gets its own careful process. If you've already pulled up that old carpet and found wood underneath, we can clean the wood floor too, using a pH-neutral product that's safe on a finished surface. It's a clean, though, not a refinish. Deep scratches and worn-through finish need a flooring contractor, and we'll say so.
And then there's the new Richmond
Head out toward the Grand Parkway and the city looks completely different. Pecan Grove dates to 1978 and wraps around a golf course, so a lot of its homes have that 1980s mix of carpeted formal rooms nobody sits in and family rooms everybody does. The formal living room usually just needs a freshen-up. The family room is where we earn our money. Further out, Harvest Green (the farm-centered community off Harlem Road), the lake-lined streets of Lakes of Bella Terra, and Long Meadow Farms are full of newer two-story houses where the carpet is upstairs and the wear is on the stairs.
Different houses, same routine. We look the house over together and settle the price, then it's spot treatment, the cleaning pass, and a short wait while the carpet dries. Plan on being back to normal by mid-afternoon if we start in the morning.
